Earth Day prompted me to take the TTC subway across town to a morning meeting today. No hassle, got some reading done and made one small contribution to the environment.
It is all about choices - and some are easy to make!

This is a great article on the genesis of Earth Day.

Too many people are getting hung up on Global Warming, and Climate Change, and the arguments ignore the fact that, no matter which think tank has it right, our environment is noticeably degrading and at risk from the mass production, consumer oriented lifestyle that we've all become accustomed to over the years. We need to change our habits, and its as simple as consumers all deciding to do simple every day things differently. Composting, eliminating plastic water bottles, using biodegradable products...all make a difference.

This Earth Day, we will be participating in setting up the Green Living Show (catch us at booth 1737), and so the work continues to spread the message.

Back at home, my family will be eating fresh, organic fruits and vegetables from Green Earth Organics .....and they are tastier too!

Here's a further benefit of the tankless water heater, and the result of a recent test. You know how bad it is when you are in the shower and someone flushes the toilet somewhere in the house? You get scalded right? Well, we tested this the other day with the tankless water heater, and voila! No scalded person in the shower. Save your marriage! Get a tankless water heater.

My mission in 2010 is to continue to use GreenCricket as a mechanism to spread the news about living a greener lifestyle and the impact that it could make on our planet.

I find it frustrating to listen to the constant debate about global warming and climate change. it reminds me of the endless non-sense that happened around whether smoking could be PROVEN to cause cancer. By the time we had the scientific proof...how many people had died? I feel the same way about the environment. Is it not plainly obvious that we are polluting our planet, and depleting our precious resources? Why do we need to spend endless hours and research dollars to justify changing our behaviour.

If every person in North America spent $1,000 per year on environmentally friendly products,....it would create over a BILLION dollars of good quality environmental products entering our economy. Think of the huge impact that this would have on the way that manufacturer's allocate their human resources and other capital. Towards the RIGHT types of products, and recycling efforts.

Let's get going and each start to PULL the right economic behaviour. That's what I want for the decade. it can happen, one step at a time.

This is very informative on tankless water heating systems. We've been looking at one for our home in Toronto, and I think it will make a big difference. thanks for the information.

Hi Madison,

Thanks so much for your comments. I'm settling in to San Francisco and have lots to comment about. There is definitely a higher awareness of green issues around here, but there is still much that needs to be done. Public transit is not great here, and the urban sprawl down the peninsula to San Jose means that everyone drives. And not necessarily hybrids. I am happy to report, though, that I purchased a VW Jetta TDI - I get 65mpg on the highway, no carbon footprint, and clean diesel means my smog emissions are very low. That is, when I use it - I'm almost always on my bike!

Toronto is indeed ahead of New York in many ways. But New York is ahead of Toronto in others. New York has density issues, and Toronto has sprawl issues. Each city tackles its own green priorities in different ways. It's very much like comparing apples and oranges, so beware of making the claim that Toronto is so far ahead, because in some ways it is, in others it is not.

More on this in future blogs. Thanks for keeping me focused!

This is very interesting, and I am amazed that Toronto is so far ahead of the very "forward" thinkers of New York in this regard.

I will be very interested to follow you blogs.......hopefully San Fran will be much greener!

The blog makes an excellent point that: "Variability" is really the enemy - and that being responsive and "agile" in the face of change is the way to a sustainable future.
